Rehoming your pet

Fluvanna SPCA strives to be a helpful resource when Fluvanna County dog or cat owners wish to rehome their pets.  Limitations in housing space, medical care, staff time, and foster/adoptive homes necessitate that we manage intakes.

We encourage owners to exhaust all other options prior to surrendering an animal to FSPCA. Options include seeking assistance with training or medical bills, return to adopting agency, and private rehoming.

If you need to rehome your pet, you are your pet’s best chance of finding a new loving home. The shelter is a stressful environment for animals, so helping them transition directly into a new home is always the best option. Here are some tips to guide you through the private rehoming process:

  • Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered and up to date on their vaccines.

  • Take photos and videos of your pet that show their best angles and personality. Write an adoption biography that highlights your pet and describes their ideal home.

  • Start networking your pet! Post your pet as available for adoption on your social media, Facebook rehoming groups, and Nextdoor. Ask your friends and family to share your posts.

  • Post on adoption platforms. Several great online adoption platforms exist, including  Adopt-A-Pet, Petfinder, and RescueMe.org.

Except in emergency situations, we accept owner surrenders by appointment only. This allows us to obtain necessary medical and behavioral information and have an appropriate kennel or foster space available. If acceptance of an animal would exceed FSPCA’s capacity to provide appropriate care for all of the animals in FSPCA’s custody, that animal will be placed on a waitlist until we are able to accept the animal. We reserve the right to deny admission to animals who do not meet our criteria for adoption due to medical or behavioral problems.

We are contractually obligated to accept owner surrenders brought to the shelter by an Animal Control Officer but it is our understanding that ACOs will not routinely accept surrender of an animal unless there is an urgent safety or welfare concern that requires removal of the animal from the owner’s custody.

To ensure we provide you and your pet with the time, care, and resources you both deserve, please complete the appropriate online surrender form for your pet’s species (linked below). A member of our team will follow up with you as soon as possible.

Please note:

  • Completing a surrender form does not guarantee that your pet will be accepted into our program.

  • The Fluvanna SPCA is only able to accept pets from Fluvanna County residents.

Please bring the following to your surrender appointment:

  • A valid driver’s license or photo ID

  • All veterinary records for your pet

  • Any medications your pet is currently taking
